About the project:
Located in a suburban context of varying architectural styles, the medical center presents itself as a pure mostly closed volume to the sides and rear, the rectangular form completed by a mashrabiya screen. The creation of a microclimate of shade and landscape forms the heart of the medical center, incorporating traditional passive cooling techniques of air movement, water cooling and shading to reduce the ambient temperature, and establish privacy, openness and dappled natural light. A large shaded terrace extends the full width of the garden, emphasizing the inside-outside relationship of living spaces and garden.
Air-conditioning, public health and lighting were critical for designing of the project considering the various elements. The challenge was not to expose any of the mechanical equipment on the facade while extracts from the basement and laboratories need to be discharged away from occupants. Dubai Health Authority (DHA) guidelines do not allow routing of waste pipes through treatment rooms, while the location was infrastructure connections were challenging to meet these requirements. Detailed coordination and with special approvals from authorities the design was completed to the satisfaction of the client.
The full basement of the medical center works as a service hub which includes parking, substation, underground tank, BMS, security rooms, medical waste neutralizer. All these services were studied for its circulation and access to maximize the efficiency. Various low current systems, i.e. CCTV, number calling, intercom, CATV systems were implemented in the project to facilitate the better experience to the operators and visitors.
